The street is flanked by colonial buildings such as those that hold the Public Library, the Monte de Piedad (pawn shop), the Museum of Contemporary Art, the former State of Oaxaca Institute of Sciences and Arts Building (today part of the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez), and diverse shops, restaurants, and craft stores.

The Macedonio Alcalá Tourist Walkway

In 2006, the tourist corridor of the center, was extended to García Vigil street, parallel to Macedonio Alcalá, it was modified and received many improvements that make it another of the most beautiful streets in the city that lead to the heart of the Zócalo and that allows a pleasant walk visiting handicraft stores, restaurants, museums and other places of interest. In high seasons and festivities, the streets of the tourist corridor are dressed in festivity and color. All tourism congregates in these main arteries.
