"LOS VIERNES DEL LLANO"

The City of Oaxaca has a beautiful place called by the El Llano people (its official name is Paseo Juárez). This place, from the colonial era, was used as a social area, in its day it was the city's zoo and from this stage there were eight statues with the figure of a lion flanking the entrances. This site is home to the traditional Lenten Fridays (which precede Holy Week and begin the first coming from Ash Wednesday), a tradition created by the Autonomous University Benito Juarez of Oaxaca in the early twentieth century. In this event the most beautiful woman is chosen through flowers; they walk around the park and the young people provide flowers to the ladies. The one that collects the most flowers is the winner and named godmother of Lent Friday. All this while listening to the State Band or the marimba.

"SAMARITANA"

The fourth Friday of Lent is celebrated, named after a biblical passage in which a Samaritan woman gives water to Jesus to quench her thirst.

In the city it is customary to give fresh and typical waters of the region to everyone who went to the atriums of the churches, They are currently offered free of charge in: churches, private homes, hotels, schools, restaurants, government agencies, etc. , to passersby to enjoy the various flavors, smells and colors characteristic of this holiday.

"VIERNES DE DOLORES"

15

The Sixth Friday of Lent, Friday of Dolores is a tradition of great devotion and an object of special veneration in the City of Oaxaca. The mother of God is worshiped, placing an altar in the best place of the churches houses or offices.

This tradition starts from the colonial era, and more certainly since when the Jesuit Fathers consecrated a spacious chapel of their magnificent temple to the Virgin of Sorrows, paying solemn worship to the image. Later the devotion was fined in the Sponsorship and in San Cosme and San Damián, where to date it endures.

The Altars de Dolores are prepared in advance from the sowing of the corn in clear clay pots; figures of animals worked in porous clay so that the chia grains germinate, depositing them in all the places closed to the light, so that they show a unique coloration and with which the altar stands are adorned under a canopy of curtains.

All the people come on the eve of Dolores Friday, to acquire their flowers and bunches of poplar and oil laurel and other branches of fresh perfume that are sold on the streets of the City. In Alameda de León it was formalized as time went by, a whole walk in which women attend, while a music group delights the audience. It has been the pleasant custom of participation of the State Band, which develops a select program without missing in the culminating part the interpretation of two or three numbers of the "Stabat Mater" by Gioacchino Rossini, and also the "Stabat Mater" by Juan Matías whose score puts the characteristic note on the good night of Good Friday.

The altars that are installed in the neighborhoods of China and the Rock, Xochimilco and Jalatlaco, where families "throw the house out the window" in passionate competition, are very famous.

It is a tradition that all the family and friends gather to admire the Altar of Dolores, before which the rosary is prayed devoutly at night and the "mysteries" are sung, beautiful pieces composed by Oaxacan composers. At the end, the participants enjoy two glasses of fresh water from horchata, Jamaica, Chia, etc. And many offer chocolates and butter bread; or sandwiches made with fish or other "vigil" food are served.

"EXHIBITION OF STANDARDS AND RELAYS"

The city of Oaxaca is characterized by having a vast religious legacy, part of which can be seen in this exhibition. Likewise, these banners and reliquaries embellish the procession of silence, with their fine velvets adorned with the gifts of the faithful, such as gold coins, miracles of gold and silver. The reliquaries belong to the brotherhoods or to families that have them under their care as a great jewel. Thus, one can admire the mixture of the indigenous with the Spanish, mestizo art that demonstrates what a culture is paid tribute to.

"PROCESSION OF SILENCE"

5

It is a procession of a mournful character in which condolences are given to the Virgin Mary. Its main feature is that as many participants as spectators remain silent as the images of the procession pass. This demonstrates respect for the death of Jesus. The procession passes through the very important streets of the city: Tourist Walker, Xolotl, García Vigil, Morelos and ends at the Church of the Sangre de Cristo, the entire route is made with a scheduled order.

Surely on more than one occasion you may have wondered why Easter does not always fall on the same day?

Well, very easy. The Catholic Church wanted from the beginning, to commemorate the death of Jesus on the same day that the gospels relate. As at that time, the Jews - just like now - use the lunar calendar, for this reason the Church has been faithful to the lunar calendar. In fact, the Holy Week calendar is governed by the day that falls on Easter Sunday, which is the Sunday following the full moon of the month of Nissan (the month of the Jews) that corresponds between March 22 and April 25th. Put simply, on Sunday after the first full moon of spring, it is Easter Sunday. The Church approved the celebration in this way at the Council of Nicea held in 325.
